Residents treated to open-air cinema during coronavirus lockdown in Brazil

Brazilians from the Cachoeira community in the Lins de Vasconcelos neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro were in for a treat on Friday (April 17) night as a film was projected onto a panoramic screen for the residents to enjoy from the windows of their homes.

The Short Festival “Cinema at Home” is a free initiative by RioFilme and the Municipal Culture Secretary, to brighten up the lives of residents in quarantine, so that they are able to stay at home and enjoy the magic of cinema with good doses of fantasy, adventure, friendship and, mainly, solidarity.

“We bring this to people who are in quarantine, who are going through these difficult times – the same as everyone in the world – so that they have a little more joy and feel comforted,” said the president of RioFilme, Cesar Miranda Ribeiro.

Local resident Aline Alves Dos Santos who has a differently-abled child, said the show helped to soothe her son, Felipe.

RioFilme is a company in Rio de Janeiro linked to the Municipl Culture Secretary. It operates in the areas of distribution, supporting the expansion of the exhibiting market, stimulating the formation of audiences and promoting audiovisual production, aiming at the effective development of the audiovisual industry in Rio.
