00:00:13
Hello and welcome.
00:00:15
Watson. You are watching w news
00:00:17
broadcasting live from the
00:00:18
Al-Arabiya headquarters.
00:00:20
These are our top stories.
00:00:22
The leader of Hezbollah says this
00:00:24
week's deadly attacks in which his
00:00:26
operatives, radios and pages
00:00:27
exploded, crossed all
00:00:30
He pointed the finger of blame
00:00:31
squarely at Israel.
00:00:36
Israel bombed southern Lebanon
00:00:38
overnight as it declares a new phase
00:00:40
of the war with the regional
00:00:45
And the FBI says Iranian
00:00:47
hackers sent messages from the
00:00:49
Trump campaign to those involved
00:00:51
in Biden's reelection bid before
00:01:05
Welcome. Thank you for joining us.
00:01:07
First, the leader of Lebanon's
00:01:08
Hezbollah gave a televised address
00:01:10
earlier on this evening.
00:01:11
This was Hassan Nasrallah, his first
00:01:13
appearance since Tuesday and
00:01:15
Wednesday's unprecedented attacks,
00:01:17
which targeted pages and walkie
00:01:19
talkies used by members of his
00:01:22
Well, at least 37 people are known
00:01:23
to have been killed and around 3000
00:01:26
others were injured.
00:01:27
Well, Hezbollah blames Israel for
00:01:29
those attacks. And in his address,
00:01:30
Nasrallah said that Israel had
00:01:32
crossed a red line.
00:01:39
Well, as Nasrallah spoke, Israeli
00:01:41
warplanes broke the sound barrier
00:01:43
over Beirut. And earlier in the day,
00:01:44
both Israel and Hezbollah carried
00:01:46
out cross-border strikes.
00:01:48
The Israeli defense minister, Yoav
00:01:50
Gallant, said today that his country
00:01:52
is at the start of a new phase in
00:01:55
From the start that thousands
00:01:57
of pages were targeted by
00:01:59
the Israeli enemy and detonated
00:02:02
With this operation, the enemy
00:02:04
crossed all laws
00:02:08
It didn't care about anything
00:02:16
Hassan Nasrallah speaking now.
00:02:17
Well, he went on to say that this
00:02:18
week's deadly attacks on Hezbollah's
00:02:20
communications devices had
00:02:22
dealt the group a severe blow
00:02:26
There is no doubt that we suffered
00:02:28
a major blow both on the
00:02:30
security and the human front,
00:02:32
which is unprecedented in the
00:02:34
history of the resistance, at least
00:02:40
Well, for more analysis, I'm joined
00:02:41
now by the senior fellow at the
00:02:42
Washington Institute and an expert
00:02:45
in Hezbollah in Gaza.
00:02:47
Thank you very much indeed for
00:02:48
taking the time to speak to us.
00:02:50
You've written about and researched
00:02:52
Hezbollah extensively.
00:02:53
I just wondered whether you had
00:02:55
watched today's address and if so,
00:02:57
what stood out for you in
00:02:58
Nasrallah's address today?
00:03:01
Yes, absolutely.
00:03:02
There are two things.
00:03:03
The three things actually stood out.
00:03:04
One, it was obviously addressed
00:03:07
not only to his own people,
00:03:09
the Hezbollah constituency, the Shia
00:03:11
community that has been locked up
00:03:13
close and personal.
00:03:14
What happened on Tuesday and
00:03:15
Wednesday and obviously
00:03:18
the panic in Lebanon.
00:03:19
We all know that fear is
00:03:21
there for the speeches,
00:03:23
is not addressed to Israel because
00:03:25
there was no threats, no promise
00:03:27
of response, no strategic
00:03:30
outline of something like that,
00:03:32
you know, military capability,
00:03:34
anything. It was addressed to the
00:03:36
community because the bank
00:03:38
is real and Hezbollah has one
00:03:40
of their challenges after that.
00:03:42
In addition, of course, through
00:03:43
the broken communication systems
00:03:46
that they have to reprogram, they
00:03:48
Now, one of the main issues is that
00:03:50
the trust before Tuesday,
00:03:52
before this pagers operations,
00:03:54
people felt that they are protected
00:03:56
one way or another, that they know
00:03:58
the war is localized.
00:03:59
And the south south of Alexandria
00:04:01
and some other areas Hezbollah
00:04:03
But the people felt more or less
00:04:07
They are not they do not feel safe
00:04:09
around people because they think
00:04:11
it's blowing up in their faces.
00:04:15
it's the trust within
00:04:17
Hezbollah itself is broken
00:04:19
because of the infiltration
00:04:21
of Israeli intelligence into their
00:04:22
ranks. So this is a serious
00:04:24
issue of trust that they have to
00:04:26
rebuild. And this speech was
00:04:27
directed at that trust.
00:04:30
And the other thing that's going on,
00:04:34
he said he acknowledged
00:04:36
that it was a big blow and
00:04:39
he wanted to tell the Lebanese
00:04:40
people that, yes, it's a big blow.
00:04:42
However, there's also, however,
00:04:44
because there's no acknowledgment
00:04:46
of this, there's always an whoever.
00:04:49
And however, there is an achievement
00:04:51
that we cannot forget, which is
00:04:52
moving the buffer zone called a
00:04:54
security zone into northern
00:04:56
Israel. And that can be achievement
00:04:58
that we've been talking about since
00:04:59
the very beginning of the war.
00:05:02
And he said he's not going to give
00:05:03
it out. And this is the third thing
00:05:04
that stood out, which means that
00:05:06
for Israel, for the rest of the
00:05:08
world, for the international
00:05:10
community, who are trying to
00:05:11
separate the two issues,
00:05:13
which are the Gaza and the Gaza
00:05:15
cease fire, and Lebanon's one,
00:05:17
he's telling them that this
00:05:19
is the only achievement.
00:05:20
We have sacrificed so much
00:05:21
for moving the buffer zone
00:05:23
into Israel, and we're not going to
00:05:25
let it go as simple as that.
00:05:28
Absolutely. And we need something in
00:05:30
return that something industry
00:05:32
rather be and that to be for
00:05:33
everyone, for even vigorous
00:05:35
negotiations over nuclear weapons.
00:05:38
We don't know what.
00:05:39
He simply doubled down
00:05:41
on the north saying that it's
00:05:43
not it's not going to happen.
00:05:44
We're asking for, of course, more
00:05:46
escalation by Israel.
00:05:48
I mean, in the immediate aftermath
00:05:50
of the pager attacks on on
00:05:52
Tuesday, Hezbollah said
00:05:54
that Israel would be punished
00:05:57
for what it did.
00:05:58
So basically what you're saying is
00:05:59
that Hezbollah is really
00:06:01
not in a position
00:06:03
to carry out such a
00:06:05
such a punishment.
00:06:06
No, I think what happened is that
00:06:08
the communication system
00:06:11
As for any military strategy
00:06:14
and any response
00:06:16
that you need to do today requires
00:06:19
And their communication is broken.
00:06:21
Their morale is broken.
00:06:22
And we so even when
00:06:24
it's minor, citizens of Iran
00:06:26
and then Hezbollah and
00:06:28
the absence Hezbollah was the
00:06:31
number two and then it's
00:06:32
military and military assistance,
00:06:35
the response was really short.
00:06:37
And they realize that any response
00:06:39
they are going to do is going to be
00:06:41
preempted by Israel's
00:06:44
They witnessed that before.
00:06:45
They they still are trying to figure
00:06:47
out really how penetrated
00:06:49
they are by the Israeli intelligence
00:06:51
apparatus. And they sense they
00:06:55
secure from this intelligence.
00:06:57
They need to counter this
00:06:59
They need to figure out a way to
00:07:00
communicate with each other.
00:07:02
They need to recover
00:07:04
the trust issue before they finally
00:07:07
And also any response that is short
00:07:09
of really harming Israel
00:07:11
is not really responsive to
00:07:15
But the problem is that if they
00:07:17
start using their actual
00:07:19
military assets, we're talking here
00:07:23
they've got the missiles, the
00:07:25
precision guided missiles and the
00:07:26
long range missiles they haven't
00:07:28
used really haven't used their
00:07:31
They haven't really used the
00:07:32
military assets that are there
00:07:33
actually, you know, and
00:07:36
they really want to use any of
00:07:37
these. It's a huge problem.
00:07:40
And the appetite for war and Israel
00:07:42
And any provocation will need Israel
00:07:44
to justify any escalation
00:07:47
And that's not something something
00:07:48
that Hezbollah would want.
00:07:49
Nothing has changed in that regard.
00:07:52
Hezbollah still prefer
00:07:54
to keep its weapons safe and intact
00:07:56
for the battles that that
00:07:58
would target the Iran.
00:08:01
So nothing has changed in that
00:08:02
regard. And they're incapable
00:08:04
of doing this until they recover.
00:08:06
They can't respond.
00:08:08
Yeah, I mean, the funerals were held
00:08:10
today for some of the Hezbollah
00:08:11
fighters who've been killed in the
00:08:12
last couple of days.
00:08:14
And as you're saying,
00:08:17
Nasrallah looking extremely
00:08:19
weak. Well, thank you very much
00:08:21
indeed. We really appreciate you
00:08:22
taking the time to speak
00:08:25
Really great to have your analysis.
00:08:27
Thank you so very much indeed.
00:08:37
according to the US authorities,
00:08:39
Iranian hackers passed on stolen
00:08:41
information from Donald Trump's
00:08:42
presidential campaign to President
00:08:43
Joe Biden's campaign team.
00:08:46
They're also accused of passing on
00:08:47
this confidential information to
00:08:49
journalists as well.
00:08:50
Was this thought to have happened in
00:08:51
June and July just before Biden
00:08:53
dropped out of the presidential
00:08:55
However, there is no evidence that
00:08:57
anyone from the Biden campaign
00:08:59
replied to those emails.
00:09:03
Well, for more on this, we can speak
00:09:05
to our correspondent.
00:09:06
Yahoo! Fazeli, thank you so
00:09:08
much for joining us.
00:09:09
Why would Iran do such a
00:09:15
agencies, including the FBI and the
00:09:17
two other agencies that put out this
00:09:18
statement, they believe
00:09:21
that this is not baseless
00:09:23
about supporting one candidate or
00:09:25
the other and more about
00:09:27
eroding public trust in the US
00:09:29
electoral process and the
00:09:31
election system.
00:09:34
the end of the day, Iran also views
00:09:36
the U.S. as its number one enemy.
00:09:38
The Iranian leadership refers to the
00:09:40
US as Great Satan,
00:09:42
the Great Satan.
00:09:42
And so any instability,
00:09:45
any chaos in the US, the
00:09:47
Iran would enjoy seeing that.
00:09:49
Perhaps the logic here
00:09:51
is that they are thinking
00:09:53
with more instability at home for
00:09:54
America, they would have less time
00:09:56
and resources to focus on
00:09:58
Iranian activities.
00:10:00
Okay, so it sounds as though
00:10:02
in Iran the desired outcome
00:10:04
is more of the same
00:10:06
and not another Trump term.
00:10:08
Do you think that's a fair reading
00:10:09
of why they did this?
00:10:12
I think I think the main
00:10:14
I think the main purpose of such
00:10:16
operations, such as cyber attacks,
00:10:18
is the main purpose.
00:10:20
And this is something that the US
00:10:21
agencies themselves believe is
00:10:23
is to first of all, fuel division.
00:10:25
And as I said, undermine trust
00:10:27
in the US election system.
00:10:30
But I think if it's a question of
00:10:31
who does Iran favor,
00:10:33
do they really want Kamala Harris or
00:10:35
Donald Trump back in the White
00:10:37
I think Iran would
00:10:39
not want to see Trump back in the
00:10:41
And the Trump campaign
00:10:43
itself, I touched on this
00:10:45
in their response to this latest
00:10:47
hacking incident when they said
00:10:49
that they argued that
00:10:51
this serves as proof
00:10:53
that the Iranians are doing their
00:10:57
help Trump's opponents,
00:10:59
because at the end of the day, Trump
00:11:01
he abandoned the 2015 nuclear
00:11:04
He reimposed sanctions on Tehran.
00:11:07
And more important than that, he
00:11:08
enforced those sanctions.
00:11:10
And also perhaps
00:11:12
the most notable event of his
00:11:14
presidency in terms of
00:11:16
Iran related events, the
00:11:17
assassination, of course, of
00:11:18
Soleimani in 2020.
00:11:21
That was a big blow to Iran.
00:11:22
So between the Democrats,
00:11:24
between Biden and Kamala Harris
00:11:26
and Trump, I think the
00:11:28
Iranians, there's reason to believe
00:11:30
that the Iranians would favor Kamala
00:11:32
Yeah, certainly the Trump campaign
00:11:34
team using this as a sort
00:11:36
of a badge of honor, really saying
00:11:38
this shows how tough it is
00:11:41
Do you have any indication as to how
00:11:43
all of this surfaced, these
00:11:45
allegations about the communications
00:11:47
being passed on from one team to the
00:11:51
Well, we don't know exactly because
00:11:54
these allegations, once
00:11:56
they were reported, the only
00:11:58
thing we know and the only thing
00:12:00
that the FBI and the two other U.S.
00:12:05
they didn't give any specific
00:12:07
information. For example, they
00:12:08
referred to the material that was
00:12:10
in the emails as a stolen nonpublic
00:12:15
They didn't elaborate any further
00:12:16
than that. And the only other thing
00:12:18
they said was that
00:12:20
the recipients didn't engage,
00:12:22
that there was no information
00:12:23
indicating that the recipients
00:12:25
responded to these emails.
00:12:29
really quite sure. It's not really
00:12:30
clear at this point.
00:12:32
So that's really important, though,
00:12:33
that last point, because it does
00:12:34
show, doesn't it, that the Biden
00:12:36
campaign team was not
00:12:38
in any way cooperating
00:12:40
that we know of with
00:12:42
with Iran on this front.
00:12:44
Yeah, well, you see, just last
00:12:46
month, the Kamala Harris campaign
00:12:48
itself said that they
00:12:50
were targeted by hackers.
00:12:52
They didn't specify the origin
00:12:54
of these hackers, where they were
00:12:56
But I go back to my point that
00:12:58
this is less about supporting one
00:13:00
candidate over the other and more
00:13:01
about just fueling
00:13:03
division and exacerbating
00:13:05
polarization in US society.
00:13:07
And so both campaigns
00:13:09
are targeted here.
00:13:11
So when we talk about these cyber
00:13:13
attacks. But but the question
00:13:15
of who does Iran prefer and the
00:13:17
White House. I think it's a separate
00:13:19
And as I said, I think
00:13:22
Iran, whilst Iran does prefer
00:13:24
they do prefer, I think, to
00:13:26
not see Trump back in the White
00:13:27
House, to see a continuation of
00:13:29
Joe Biden's policies.
00:13:32
I think, nonetheless,
00:13:34
they would still enjoy
00:13:36
witnessing this kind of chaos
00:13:38
and to this kind of instability
00:13:42
Yeah, I mean, when we've talked
00:13:42
about foreign influence operations
00:13:44
in elections in the United States in
00:13:46
the past, it's usually been with
00:13:47
regards to Russia or China.
00:13:50
How how long has Iran been engaged
00:13:53
in in this type of activity?
00:13:57
I think starting
00:13:59
with the 2016 election
00:14:01
at the time, there were some
00:14:03
reports, but the focus at the time
00:14:05
was on the Russian hackers
00:14:07
in the in the in the election
00:14:09
that followed in 2020.
00:14:11
We also had some
00:14:13
more reports about Iranian
00:14:15
election interference.
00:14:16
And now we're seeing this again,
00:14:18
I think, since 2016.
00:14:22
Iran, I would say, ramped
00:14:24
up its efforts in
00:14:27
And I think as time
00:14:29
goes on, I think as long as
00:14:32
that as long as they're not,
00:14:34
they don't feel deterred.
00:14:35
I think we will see more of this.
00:14:37
Okay. Well, thank you very much
00:14:38
indeed for speaking to us.
00:14:40
Be a correspondent for Israeli.
00:14:42
Thank you very much indeed.
00:14:51
From the White House to Gaza.
00:14:54
Cave to Beijing.
00:14:55
Elections, economics and the
00:14:57
environment compete with conflicts
00:14:59
and other complex issues for
00:15:04
In an age of fake news, deepfakes
00:15:06
and artificial intelligence, they've
00:15:08
got to have a vote and a safe.
00:15:11
It's important to look beyond the
00:15:12
loudest voice, to understand the
00:15:15
From news makers to groundbreakers.
00:15:18
Like how bad is going?
00:15:20
Presidents, prime ministers, princes
00:15:22
and peacemakers and
00:15:24
cultural tastemakers.
00:15:26
As Arabs, as Middle Eastern.
00:15:28
We're too emotional.
00:15:30
Join me on the risk control for
00:15:32
empowering conversation.
00:15:41
Let's get a brief check of some
00:15:42
other stories we're following
00:15:43
through here on air.
00:15:44
In response to this week's walkie
00:15:46
talkie and pager attacks in Lebanon,
00:15:48
the German flag carrier Lufthansa
00:15:50
says it is suspending flights
00:15:52
to Beirut once again.
00:15:54
The airline says the suspension
00:15:56
would continue until late October,
00:15:58
but that they'll reassess the
00:15:59
situation in the days ahead.
00:16:00
Well, passengers who are affected
00:16:02
can rebook or they can ask
00:16:07
Passengers traveling on flights from
00:16:09
Beirut are banned from bringing
00:16:10
walkie talkies and pages.
00:16:12
The ban will remain in place until
00:16:14
Well, meanwhile, the Lebanese army
00:16:16
says it is destroying pages and
00:16:17
suspicious telecom devices in
00:16:19
controlled explosions in various
00:16:21
parts of the country.
00:16:25
And the Japanese brand of walkie
00:16:26
talkie linked to Wednesday's
00:16:28
explosions in Lebanon says it did
00:16:29
not manufacture these particular
00:16:31
exploding handsets.
00:16:33
A spokesperson for the company,
00:16:34
which is called Icon, says
00:16:36
they stop making this type of device
00:16:38
a decade ago and that most of those
00:16:40
on the market are counterfeits.
00:16:44
Let's get some more analysis so we
00:16:46
can cross to Lebanon now and speak
00:16:48
to the deputy editor of editor of
00:16:49
the political desk at Loyola, Jewel
00:16:53
Saleh, thank you for joining us once
00:16:54
again here on Al-Arabiya.
00:16:56
Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of
00:16:58
Hezbollah, gave a speech tonight.
00:17:00
I'm assuming a lot of people there
00:17:02
in Lebanon stopped what they were
00:17:03
doing and they listened to what he
00:17:05
said and what grabbed
00:17:07
the headlines there from that
00:17:08
address. Do you think?
00:17:11
Everyone here in Lebanon was waiting
00:17:12
for Hassan Nasrallah to speak,
00:17:14
because what happened?
00:17:16
However, Hezbollah reacts to
00:17:18
the Faisal attack with
00:17:20
possibly determined the future of
00:17:21
the support front that
00:17:23
the diplomacy opened in support of
00:17:26
Hamas and dusted off.
00:17:27
What was particularly interesting in
00:17:29
that speech was how classical it
00:17:30
was. It wasn't really a very useful
00:17:33
ceasefire without any kind
00:17:35
of surprises or big announcements,
00:17:37
despite the fact that
00:17:39
has been described, the attacks
00:17:42
of Tuesday and Wednesday as
00:17:44
a huge and severe blows to the
00:17:46
However, he claimed that
00:17:49
it was not able to achieve its
00:17:50
objectives after, despite
00:17:53
the strength of that attack,
00:17:55
saying that it was not able to
00:17:57
weaken the party internally,
00:18:03
internal structure, or
00:18:05
force it to extend
00:18:08
the support front in order to
00:18:10
allow for the return of the
00:18:12
tens of thousands of Israelis to the
00:18:14
north and the north of Israel.
00:18:17
So clearly, Lebanon is still very
00:18:20
We've had these two waves of
00:18:21
exploding devices there.
00:18:23
There were pages on Tuesday,
00:18:25
walkie talkies on a Wednesday.
00:18:27
Is there a sense of nervousness that
00:18:29
there could be more booby trapped
00:18:30
devices in circulation there?
00:18:34
Indeed, we've seen people selling
00:18:36
their phones away.
00:18:36
We've seen people
00:18:38
panicking about solar panels,
00:18:40
about smartwatches
00:18:42
and other kinds of devices.
00:18:44
The army, as you said, is the
00:18:46
currently trying to
00:18:48
destroy suspicious
00:18:52
And during the siege of
00:18:54
Hassan Nasrallah, the Israeli
00:18:56
military performed a sonic boom
00:18:58
on in low altitude over Beirut.
00:19:01
This creates a huge,
00:19:03
huge shock amongst people here.
00:19:06
Yeah, it created a lot of noise.
00:19:07
And I'm assuming there was a
00:19:09
message. There was a message in that
00:19:10
as well, wasn't there?
00:19:13
Yeah, It's it's basically
00:19:15
telling everyone, Hassan Nasrallah
00:19:16
amongst people say.
00:19:19
Okay. And I just want to ask you,
00:19:20
what's been happening on the border
00:19:21
today on both sides.
00:19:28
the baby may attacks
00:19:31
a little more than usual.
00:19:33
On the other hand, performed
00:19:36
a very big amount and very strong
00:19:38
attacks before having a cellular
00:19:41
speech, which again seemed like a
00:19:42
message to to the party and to the
00:19:44
people of this house.
00:19:46
And just last night.
00:19:47
So far, we're still.
00:19:52
So far, we're still within the rules
00:19:55
Of course, if you put aside on the
00:19:57
basis of that, there was an
00:19:59
engagement. That's fair and that's
00:20:02
upon on October 7th.
00:20:05
Again, I was going to say, lastly,
00:20:07
is there a sense of relief there
00:20:09
in Lebanon that today has passed
00:20:13
twists in this plot and there
00:20:15
haven't been any further cases of
00:20:16
of exploding devices there today?
00:20:20
I think we still have to wait and
00:20:24
will react, especially after some of
00:20:26
the speech where it is mentioned
00:20:28
that the party will be punished for
00:20:30
its support of this
00:20:33
However, he seemed to
00:20:35
say that it's going to be
00:20:37
a secret operation and
00:20:39
a and he did not say
00:20:42
when. He said it could take weeks
00:20:44
or something. So it seems like we
00:20:46
are headed toward some kind of
00:20:47
repetition of the scenario of that
00:20:49
of the last time as
00:20:52
a nation when the budget
00:20:53
of the military.
00:20:57
Okay. Well, thank you so much.
00:21:01
Okay. We have to leave it there.
00:21:01
Thank you very much indeed.
00:21:02
Deputy editor of the Political
00:21:04
Deaths on the show, Saleh Hejazi.
00:21:06
Thank you very much indeed.
00:21:07
Thank you very much.
00:21:13
Let's get a check of some other of
00:21:14
the day's top stories.
00:21:16
The United States has imposed
00:21:17
sanctions on Thursday on a network
00:21:19
of five groups and one person based
00:21:21
in Russia and the Georgian region of
00:21:24
This for enabling illicit payments
00:21:26
between Russia and North Korea.
00:21:28
Well, in a statement, the Department
00:21:29
of Treasury said today's sanctions
00:21:31
demonstrate that Putin's regime's
00:21:33
use of illicit financial schemes
00:21:35
had enabled Pyongyang to access
00:21:37
the international banking system,
00:21:39
which is a violation of the targeted
00:21:41
sanctions laid out
00:21:43
by the U.N. Security Council
00:21:48
Russia is ramping up drone
00:21:49
production to 1.4 million.
00:21:51
Speaking at a meeting of the
00:21:53
Industrial and Military commission
00:21:55
today, President Vladimir Putin
00:21:56
highlighted the need for weapons,
00:21:58
military and special equipment
00:22:00
has increased significantly.
00:22:03
While Putin told members of the
00:22:04
commission that the output of major
00:22:05
armored vehicles had doubled
00:22:07
compared to last year, while
00:22:08
production of the most in-demand
00:22:10
weapons has tripled.
00:22:15
And and pox vaccines have been
00:22:17
administered in Africa for the first
00:22:18
time with several hundred high risk
00:22:20
individuals vaccinated in Rwanda.
00:22:22
The African Union's disease control
00:22:24
center, the CDC, said that the first
00:22:26
300 vaccinations
00:22:28
were administered on Tuesday near
00:22:29
the border with the Democratic
00:22:31
Republic of Congo.
00:22:35
The US central bank has lowered
00:22:37
interest rates for the first time
00:22:39
since the beginning of the pandemic.
00:22:40
Their aggressive half point cut
00:22:41
comes amidst concerns over a slowing
00:22:45
Well, the Federal Reserve's decision
00:22:46
should bring relief to households
00:22:48
and businesses that are straining
00:22:49
under elevated rates and is likely
00:22:51
to influence borrowing costs around
00:22:54
Kate Fisher filed this report from
00:22:58
As more Americans look
00:22:59
for work, the country's central
00:23:02
bank has taken decisive action
00:23:04
to keep the job market from slowing
00:23:06
any further while also
00:23:08
trying to keep inflation in check.
00:23:11
This decision reflects our growing
00:23:13
confidence that with an appropriate
00:23:15
recalibration of our policy stance,
00:23:17
strength in the labor market can be
00:23:19
maintained in a context
00:23:21
of moderate growth and inflation
00:23:23
moving sustainably down to 2%.
00:23:26
Inflation has been easing towards
00:23:28
those normal levels after
00:23:30
a post-pandemic peak of more
00:23:32
than 9%, something
00:23:34
that Fed leaders expect to continue.
00:23:37
Those leaders applauded by
00:23:39
market watchers who'd been waiting
00:23:42
Robert Jay Powell.
00:23:49
That is the right move.
00:23:51
And and we're just beginning.
00:23:53
But I really think the markets
00:23:55
needed to see the 50 basis
00:23:57
points to just move us
00:23:59
up here. We really got behind the
00:24:01
That's good news for Americans
00:24:03
with mortgages, car loans or
00:24:05
credit card debt, offering
00:24:07
them some relief as the Fed
00:24:09
signaled that interest rates will
00:24:11
lower further with another
00:24:13
50 point rate cuts expected
00:24:15
before the end of the year and
00:24:17
more to come in 2025.
00:24:20
Kate Fisher, Al-Arabiya News,
00:24:25
Germany is planning some 445
00:24:27
million USD in extra military
00:24:29
aid for Ukraine this year.
00:24:31
That's despite a row over budgetary
00:24:34
The news agency AFP is reporting
00:24:36
that a letter from the Ministry of
00:24:37
Finance outlines this planned
00:24:38
expenditure earmarking funds
00:24:40
for additional drones and air
00:24:42
defense equipment, amongst other
00:24:46
And Brazil's Supreme Court
00:24:48
has today ordered the social media
00:24:50
platform X not to try
00:24:51
to circumvent a previous ruling that
00:24:53
suspended the platform in the
00:24:55
Should X, which is owned by Elon
00:24:58
Musk, continue its service,
00:25:00
the company would face a fine of
00:25:01
more than 900 million USD
00:25:04
Well, in August, the Supreme Court
00:25:06
ordered Brazil's Internet and mobile
00:25:07
services to block the platform.
00:25:13
How. A sports story we're following
00:25:14
for you now. The world's former
00:25:15
number one professional golfer, Rory
00:25:17
McIlroy, has publicly challenged
00:25:19
Ian Poulter in hopes of captaining
00:25:22
In an exclusive interview here on
00:25:24
Al-Arabiya News, Poulter expressed
00:25:26
hope for future involvement in the
00:25:29
Here's what he told my colleague,
00:25:30
Rosanna Lockwood.
00:25:32
Now, it goes without saying that
00:25:34
if you cut in half,
00:25:36
you know, in there's like a sticker
00:25:38
that says Ryder Cup.
00:25:39
I've been part of so many Ryder
00:25:41
Cups. It's been it's been
00:25:44
my golf in life.
00:25:45
It's some of the most proudest
00:25:47
moments of my career, the
00:25:49
opportunity to be able to be
00:25:50
captain, because as it stands
00:25:53
today, that that's that's not going
00:25:57
But I would love that
00:25:59
I would love to lead a team
00:26:04
That was Ian Poulter speaking to
00:26:05
this channel. But McIlroy
00:26:07
has responded casting doubt on that
00:26:09
scenario, saying it's because they
00:26:11
no longer have a connection with
00:26:12
Europe's emerging stars after
00:26:13
defecting to leave golf.
00:26:21
Let's get a quick reminder of our
00:26:22
top stories on Al-Arabiya.
00:26:23
The leader of Hezbollah said this
00:26:25
week's deadly attacks in which his
00:26:27
operatives, radios and pages
00:26:29
exploded, crossed all
00:26:32
He pointed the finger of blame
00:26:33
squarely at Israel.
00:26:38
Israel bombed southern Lebanon
00:26:39
overnight as it declares a new phase
00:26:41
of the war with the regional
00:26:43
militant groups.
00:26:46
And the FBI says Iranian hackers
00:26:48
sent messages from the Trump
00:26:50
campaign to those involved in
00:26:52
Biden's reelection bid just before
00:26:54
he dropped out of the race earlier
00:26:59
That is all we have time for.
00:27:00
Coming up next is Hadley Gamble
00:27:02
interviewing Prince Turki al-Faisal
00:27:04
and a repeat of a previous interview
00:27:06
with the U.S. envoy to Yemen,
00:27:08
Tim Lenderking, about that
00:27:10
later on. And then at 1:30 p.m.
00:27:12
Eastern Time, please do join my
00:27:14
colleague, Rosanna Lockwood, for

today's edition of Global News

00:27:19
international news, with exclusive
00:27:20
insights and fresh perspectives from
00:27:23
