The Hungarian government has appealed to the European Union for more money to cope with the number of refugees crossing its border.

On Tuesday a surge of people, many of them refugees from Syria, entered the country passing through gaps in an unfinished barrier.

Fleeing from war and poverty, they walked around or over coils of barbed wire strung out along Hungary's 175km frontier with Serbia, children hoisted on shoulders, bags in hand.
