Syria under al-Assad was a key component of Iran’s “axis of resistance,” a loose alliance of forces united in their opposition to Israel, which included Lebanon’s Hezbollah as well as Hamas.

Since its war with Hamas in Gaza erupted on October 7, 2023, Israel ramped up its air strikes on Iranian-linked targets in Syria.

Earlier Monday, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group said ongoing events in Syria were “a Syrian affair” and hoped Syria would remain supportive of the Palestinian people.

“What happened in Syria is a Syrian affair,” PIJ Secretary-General Jihad al-Nakhalah said in a statement.

He added that his movement hoped that “Syria will remain a true supporter and backer of the Palestinian people and their just cause, as it has always been.”

According to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, some 438,000 Palestinians registered as refugees resided in Syria in 2022.
