In the latest hostile remarks from Iranian authorities against Syria’s new leadership, the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Monday that while Iran’s “enemies” have succeeded in Syria, the situation will change.

“In Syria… the enemies have achieved their objectives, but the situation will not remain this way,” state media quoted Hossein Salami, the IRGC’s chief commander, as saying.

“Our missiles can strike any enemy target in the region and overcome the enemy’s anti-missile defenses,” he added.

Iran was a key ally of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who was toppled by opposition forces in December after 13 years of war. His fall marked a major setback for Tehran, which had backed his regime with financial and military aid since the conflict began in 2011, following a brutal crackdown by the regime on peaceful protests.

Since al-Assad’s removal, senior Iranian officials have repeatedly made hostile statements toward Syria’s new leadership.

Two weeks after al-Assad’s fall on December 8, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei predicted the rise of “a strong, honorable group” in Syria – widely interpreted as a signal that Tehran plans to establish a new proxy force in the country.

Iran’s rhetoric drew criticism from the Arab League, which issued a statement the same month rejecting “Iranian statements aimed at fueling strife among the Syrian people.”
