Technical glitch temporarily unblocks Al Jazeera, beIN Sports in Saudi Arabia

Published: Updated:

Authorities in Saudi Arabia say a ban Qatar-based Al Jazeera and beIN Sports is still in effect despite a technical glitch which meant the websites of the channels were accessible earlier in the day.

Users in Saudi Arabia were able to access the websites early on Monday but authorities say that was because of a “technical error”.

Saud al-Qahtani, a key adviser to the Saudi Royal Court, said in a tweet on Monday: “The lifting of the ban on Qatari sites was due to a technical error that will be repaired in the coming hours”.

UAE telecommunications providers du and Etisalat reinstated BeIN Sports channels on Saturday, saying in text messages to subscribers that the package would be subject to ongoing review, the UAE newspaper The National reported.

As of late Monday morning, Al Jazeera remained blocked in both countries, along with the websites for Qatar Airways and Doha News.
