A man has been widely commended after a video of him planting seeds of the Haloxylon ammodendron tree in the desert went viral.

Abu Mohammed can be seen in the video crawling along the ground as he rakes holes in the sand, then places seeds down, before covering the area back over again.

He said his friend irrigates the seeds. Then once the new trees have grown he picks the seeds and the cycle starts over again.

He has received widespread commendation for his efforts from activists who said such kind acts reflected responsibility towards the environment, adding that his work deserved recognition as it was the municipalities' role to perform this task.

They also demanded schools planned trips that encouraged students to plant trees to help preserve the environment and prevent desertification.

The Haloxylon ammodendron is a famous plant in Arab countries and is mentioned in local poems and tales that refer to its unique presence in the Arabian Peninsula. It grows in sandy dunes.
