The news of a middle-aged British woman who reportedly abandoned her teenage children to join Islamist extremists in Syria has shocked many in the UK community.

Sally Jones, who is believed to be in her 40s, reportedly traveled to Syria to join militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

Dr. Usama Hasan, a senior Researcher at Quilliam, a London-based think tank that focuses on “counter-extremism,” says many people could resort to an extremist version of Islam in an attempt to run away from personal issues.
