Gaza City officials have warned that sewage could overflow and flood homes if the Israeli offensive prevents crews from operating critical sanitation facilities.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the municipality said its teams have been unable to reach Sewage Pumping Station No. 5, known as the “al-Baqara Station,” and Station 7B east of the al-Zaytoun neighborhood in the south of the city. Prolonged disruption, it warned, could cause the stations to overflow and inundate surrounding residential areas.

The municipality also highlighted dangers in the al-Manara area and around the rainwater collection basin in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood in northwest Gaza, saying its crews have been blocked from accessing or operating the facilities due to the security situation.

The warnings come as tens of thousands of reservists started to report for duty on Tuesday ahead of a new Israeli offensive in Gaza City, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to speed up, despite warnings from senior ranks.

Israeli Army Radio said that some 40,000 reservists would report for duty on Tuesday for the Gaza City offensive. The military said it was preparing logistically for the intake of reservists ahead of the offensive.
