Death toll in Jordan floods rises to 12 as body of young girl found

The death toll in Jordan's flash floods on Friday, after torrential rains swept across several parts of the country, rose to 12, according to the country’s Civil Defense.

The number of people killed by the floods has risen to 12, including a young girl and a diver in the civil defense team, according to Iyad al-Amro, a spokesman for the Civil Defense.

Al-Amro told Al Arabiya English that the Jordanian Armed Forces and the General Directorate of Gendarmerie were conducting search operations.

Among the dead were five people killed in Madaba, a young girl in Maan, and three in the southern part of Amman.

Minister of State for Media Affairs and government spokesperson Jumana Ghunaimat, said the number of people rescued had reached “thousands, including more than 3,000 people in the Petra region.”

On Friday, authorities evacuated 3762 tourists from different nationalities who were visiting the ancient city of Petra in southern Jordan.

On October, 25, at least 18 people, mainly schoolchildren and teachers, were killed in a flash flood near Jordan’s Dead Sea that happened while they were on an outing, rescuers and hospital workers said.
