The sixth annual Gulf Film Festival (GFF) held under the patronage of the chairman of the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, is set to take place next April.

The event will showcase films in three categories, Gulf Films, Gulf Students’ Shorts and International Shorts from both up-and-coming as well as established directors, reported The National. The winning filmmakers will be awarded with Dh 500,000 in funding.

The festival will feature films of both fiction and non-fiction. The Gulf Films category is open to feature and short filmmakers from the Gulf, or filmmakers with a movie that exhibits the Gulf region. Participants hoping to enter in the Gulf Students’ Shorts category must be current students in the Gulf and the international category is open to participants worldwide.

Masoud Amralla Al Ali the festival’s director said in a statement that “As the home of contemporary cinema from the Arabian peninsula, the key success factor for GFF lies in the quality and diversity of films submitted and showcased from around the region,” reported The National.

“This festival offers a window into the lives, issues and opinions of the region through raw, emotive and thought-provoking stories powerfully brought to life through the wonder of film. I have no doubt that this year’s submissions will offer strong competition and raise the bar - not only for filmmakers across the region, but also across the globe,” he added.

The Gulf Film Festival has been established as the chief promoter of regional filmmakers. The festival highlights the best of Arab cinema and gives the filmmakers the opportunity to have International exposure.

Lights, Intersections and Films for Children are also categories showcased at the Festival. However, they are not competitive categories.

The festival organizers are due to hold master classes and discussions about the industry during the weeklong festival.

The Gulf Film Festival organizers are also set to host the second edition of the Gulf Script Market for Short Films, which aims to aid scriptwriters with script development and building partnerships between both producers and directors.
