Israel struck an unnamed site in Iran overnight Friday, according to a US official, in what appeared to have been an initial Israeli retaliation for Tehran’s attack last week.

The official told ABC News that Israeli missiles had hit a site inside Iran. Unconfirmed reports said explosions were also heard in Iraq and Syria.

US officials told Al Arabiya English that they had anticipated an Israeli retaliation within the next 24 hours. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan spoke with senior Israeli officials earlier in the day, and Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin had a call with his Israeli counterpart. “Regional threats and Iran’s destabilizing actions in the Middle East” were one of the topics discussed, the Pentagon said in a readout of Austin’s call.

Washington has repeatedly said that it will not take part in any Israeli operation against Iran after last weekend’s first-ever attack on Israel from Iranian soil that US officials say involved over 300 drones and missiles.

Iran’s Fars News Agency reported that explosions were heard in Central Isfahan Airport, but the reason was unknown. “The cause of these sounds is still unknown, and investigations continue until the exact details of the incident are determined,” the semi-official Fars news agency said.

Flight tracking websites showed civilian planes diverting away from Iran. At least one flight from Dubai to Tehran diverted back to Dubai after entering Iranian airspace.

Iran later suspended flights over several cities, according to Iranian state media.

On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden warned that the US could be drawn in to a wider regional war if Iran succeeds in significantly escalating its assault on Israel. He added that it would be “unthinkable” that the US would stand by if Israel’s defenses were weakened and “Iran was able to carry out the destruction it intended [last] weekend.”

Tehran was responding to the Israeli airstrike that targeted the Iranian consulate in Damascus weeks before that killed senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officials.

The US president said both Ukraine and Israel were able to defend their own sovereignty, but “they depend on American assistance, including weaponry, to do it.”
