Egyptian belly dancer Sama al-Masri summoned for ‘spreading obscenity’

An Egyptian judge on Saturday summoned to court contentious belly dancer Sama al-Masri on charges of “spreading obscenity” in the Egyptian society, Egyptian daily Al-Ahram reported.

The complaint against Masri was filed by controversial lawyer Mortada Mansour, whom Masri had recently mocked on her TV channel Felool.

The judge said investigation with Masri will begin Tuesday, the newspaper reported.

Masri was briefly detained last Sunday on charges of operating a television channel without a license.

She came under the spotlight when she reportedly launched her channel as a stand against Muslim Brotherhood members in Egypt.

Her channel, Felool (which means “remnants,” usually associated with the former President Hosni Mubarak’s regime), has been on air for about three months.

With her songs, dances and sketches, Masri’s channel gave her a platform to express her stances towards politicians and the country’s various issues.
